If you’ve been commuting to Auckland so often that you could do it with your eyes closed, now you can on the Mahu City Express!
Mahu City Express is a Warkworth bus service with a difference. We run commuters from the Warkworth and Mahurangi area into the Auckland CBD every business day, and back again every night – and we do it in style
We do our best to pick you up and drop you off at times and places that work for you.
Once everyone is on board, we zoom non-stop down to the city, using the Northern Busway to avoid the traffic! That means you spend less time travelling, so you can spend more time working, or not working, it’s up to you!

No buses to Auckland?
When Julian Ostling moved to Warkworth in 2012, he was surprised to find there was no way to bus into the city, something this Londoner hadn’t anticipated when he moved to New Zealand. Now, the Mahu City Express runs from Warkworth to the Auckland CBD twice a day each way, five days a week.
Theoretically, getting from Warkworth to the city should be a little under an hour’s drive. But at 8.00 a.m. on a Monday, it’s a whole different story. Once you pass the tolls and reach Oteha Valley and Greville Road, the rush hour traffic hits with full, congested force. If the weather’s bad, it’s even worse: commutes can take almost two hours.
When it came to getting to work, the only real choice was for residents is to drive, which Julian thought was crazy, so he ran an informal carpool for his fellow Warkworth residents. The carpool was a success and it quickly got him thinking about setting up a Warkworth bus service for commuters.
The stress-free Warkworth bus service was born
In October 2015, Julian bought a 16-seater bus and launched the Mahu City Express. Running twice in the morning between 6.00 and 9.00 a.m., and twice in the evening between 4.00 and 7.00 .pm., this Warkworth bus service takes commuters from Snells Beach right to Auckland city centre.
Since many of the Mahu City Express’s passengers are regulars working the 9-5 grind in the city, everyone eventually gets to know each other, with people chatting and socialising both on and off the bus.
Easing the daily grind
Aboard the buses, the team does things like Magnum Mondays, where everyone gets an ice cream in the afternoon for surviving the first day of the week, and Fizzy Fridays.…
Get your time back
Mahu City Express is a better way to spend time. You can get stuff like emails out of the way, and you’re not travelling in a cold, unfamiliar environment. You’re cruising along in a friendly, social environment, not standing or bouncing around on a cold, hard seat. This bus service really is a first-class way to go.
